Cover Story:
Infant Mortality Crisis
This month, we’re devoting the entire show to a problem plaguing the nation – and the Mid-South in particular – infant mortality, when a baby dies before turning one year old. Smart Medicine host Joe Birch moderates a distinguished panel of experts to uncover why babies in Memphis and Shelby County are dying at third-world rates. We'll also look into new treatments and technology being used to save those born too small and too soon. And, we’ll meet some very special volunteers who are helping to turn the tide of this crisis in our region.
Featured in the show are:
- Dr. Sheldon Korones - Founder of the Newborn Center at the Regional Medical Center
- A C Wharton, Jr. – Mayor of Shelby County
- Tonya Lewis Lee, author/producer and wife of acclaimed film director Spike Lee
- Dr. Giancarlo Mari – Chief of Maternal and Fetal Medicine – UT Health Science Center
- Antionette Holman – Infant Mortality Reduction Coordinator, Shelby County
- Rev. Dr. Kenneth Robinson – Shelby County Health Officer
- Dr. Ann Payne-Johnson – Family Practitioner, Baptist Memorial Medical Group
